01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Lifting the heavy lid of the pot releases a fragrant plume of dashi steam, setting the tone for a meal at omo cafe. Among the most popular orders is the sea bream kamameshi set, which cooks fresh sea bream fillets directly with seasoned broth until a savory layer of crisped rice forms at the bottom. The iron pot is served as a balanced Japanese meal alongside 3 small side dishes, miso soup, and pickles.

The kamameshi lineup extends well beyond tradition. Alongside classic chicken mince and thigh meat, the kitchen turns out creative variations like a whole tomato and melted cheese cooked risotto-style, or a Spanish-inspired paella pot made with seafood and saffron. Other satisfying choices offered day and night include the Wagyu roast beef hitsumabushi set—featuring homemade roast beef and simmered beef shigureni served with condiments and dashi broth to shift flavors midway through—and the Omo Cafe Gohan Plate, which brings together 6 small portions of various side dishes.

Desserts Celebrating Tea and Local Ingredients

For an afternoon break or dessert after a meal, the cafe offers a substantial selection of Kyoto-influenced sweets. The signature Omo Parfait layers matcha mousse, ice cream, Tamba Dainagon red beans, and chewy shiratama dango inside an earthenware vessel, meant to be drizzled with matcha syrup to taste. Other thoughtfully composed offerings include the warm chocolate terrine served with sweet red beans, a soymilk yuba cheesecake made with fresh tofu skin from Nishiki Market, and a matcha roll cake highlighting tea from historic Kyoto purveyor Ippodo Tea. In summer, generously sized shaved-ice bowls such as yuzu and Uji matcha milk join the menu alongside coffees and teas.

Housed in a renovated traditional machiya more than 100 years old that once operated as a dried-goods shop, the interior preserves the warmth of exposed timber in an unhurried atmosphere. Counter seating suits solo guests, while table seating and a private room accommodate everything from a casual shopping-break lunch to an unhurried dinner.
